analytic typology
𓆸
Published on the scientific blog of the Fondation des Treilles in 2021, this post by Sébastien Plutniak about analytic typology, a methodology developed by lithic archaeologist George Laplace from 1950 onwards:
Starting in the late 1950s, archaeologist Georges Laplace developed “analytical typology” (TA), a typological approach to prehistoric lithic industries. First established in his doctoral thesis (1961), this approach was continuously developed by Laplace and his collaborators until the 2000s. TA made it possible to systematically analyze and represent the properties of prehistoric stone objects. This mode of representation was based neither entirely on the use of numbers nor entirely on the descriptive means of natural languages (French, Italian, etc.), but took the form of standardized character sequences combining numbers and abbreviations, which had to be composed in accordance with a specific syntax and lexicon.
